The Democratic Party 100-Hours Hunger Strike Declaration

27 June 2003

To protest against the government in legislating on Article 23 of Basic Law, the Democratic Party will stage a 100-hours hunger strike. Despite vehement opposition against the legislation, the government rushes the anti-subversion legislation through in the Legislative Council, the law which will erode Hong Kong's freedom, human rights and the rule of law.

While many countries are heading towards democracy, freedom and openness, our government is going in an opposite direction. At a time when we are plagued by economic woes, the government pushes through the anti-subversion legislation against the will of the people. The Democratic Party strongly opposes the Tung administration, and strives for a democratically elected Chief Executive and a fully democratically elected legislature. We hope to convey through this peaceful protest of hunger strike our persistence in striving for democracy and freedom, and that you may join us in the cause.

Join us on July 1 in the rally against the anti-subversion legislation, and strive for the return of political power to the people. Let your voice be heard, and your voice of opposition sweep down the mighty walls of oppression. Let us stand up for freedom together, and let freedom reign.

Chairman of Democratic Party, Dr Yeung Sum

Vice-chairman of Democratic Party, Albert Ho, Lee Wing Tat
