The Democratic Party calls for peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis

12 February 2003

On the escalation of tension in Iraq, the Democratic Party states that:

  1. According to the Article 1, Chapter 1, Charter of the United Nations, 'the purposes of the United Unions is to maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace.' The Democratic Party urges all members of the United Nations to respect the Charter and we oppose any military action taken unilaterally against Iraq without the consent of the United Nations.
  2. The Democratic Party urges all countries to respect the results of the UN inspections. UN inspectors should be given adequate time to search for proof of possession of weapons of mass destruction by Iraq. In order to allay the fears of the international community and to prevent war, we also urge Iraq to fully cooperate with the inspectors and prove it does not possess weapons of mass destruction.
  3. The US and UK state that war with Iraq is part and partial of anti-terrorism in the international community, the Democratic Party cannot agree with this. There is no concrete evidence to prove that Iraq supports terrorist activities. On the other hand, if the US and UK attack Iraq, innocent Iraqi people will be killed, and will elevate the discontent of the Arabic society against US and UK. This may possibly cause more terrorist activities that are harmful to the peace and security of the world.
  4. The Democratic Party urges all countries to make peace and not war. We hope that the Iraqi crises will be resolved peacefully.

Chairman of Democratic Party, Dr Yeung Sum

Vice-chairman of Democratic Party, Albert Ho
