DP Legislators going to attend US hearing on democracy in Hong Kong 2 March 2004 The East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate is going to hold a hearing on democracy in Hong Kong on Mar 04, 2004 (US time). Legislators Martin Lee and James To of the Democratic Party have been invited to attend the hearing to reflect views on democracy and political development in Hong Kong. Mr. Martin Lee said, "The main objective of this trip is to truly reflect Democratic Party's views on the political system in HKSAR. Namely we support China's resumption of sovereignty of Hong Kong under the policy of One Country Two Systems, Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong with high degree of autonomy and the Chief Executive and all Legislators to be elected by universal suffrage in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In addition, the Democratic Party all along supports the One China policy and is in support of Taiwan's reunification with the Mainland by peaceful means." Mr. Lee also said, "My biggest ambition is to go to Beijing to tell our leaders there what things are in Hong Kong and that nobody in Hong Kong wants independence." Mr. James To added, "I believe it is for the benefit of Hong Kong if we can let the international communities to know the real situation in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is an international city and it is important to let the international communities to understand Hong Kong better so that they can have confidence in Hong Kong. Also, as for the new leaders in the Central People's Government, I believe they have broad vision and realize the development of democracy in the Mainland China including HKSAR will enable China to join the international forum."
