Democratic Party Representative to attend United Nations Hearing

20th Mar 2006

The Human Rights Committee of the United Nations will hold the second hearing on Hong Kong's implementation of the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights during 20th -21st March 2006. The Deputy Chairperson of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong will attend the hearing in New York today and express concerns about the territory's autonomy and the rule of law after the Interpretation of Basic Law by the National People's Congress Standing Committee last year. We will also raise our concerns over the recent proposed legislation on covert surveillance and interception of communication, especially as to its impact on the right of privacy. A 52-page report has already been sent to the United Nations. Please find attached the Executive Summary of the Submission of the Democratic Party to the United Nations.
