DEMOCRATIC PARTY CALLS CLARIFICATION BAD PRECEDENT

February 26, 1999

Democratic Party Chairman Martin Lee criticized the government for its motion of clarification in the right of abode cases and the Court of Final Appeal for entertaining it.

Mr. Lee said

"the Court of Appeal appears to have bowed to political pressure by doing something completely uncessary, and without merit or justification. Indeed the parties to the case acknowledged at the hearing today that the judgment was clear and unambiguous.

The Hong Kong government has set a very bad precedent. Nevertheless, the court has not changed its  earlier judgment."
